Sten Sture the younger

Regent 1512-1520.

Parents: Svante Nilsson and Iliana Gädda.

When Svante Nilsson died, Erik Trolle was elected Regent, but Sten Svantesson, or Sten Sture the younger as he has been called, managed to be elected on 23 of July 1512. He negotiated with the Pope about becoming King of Sweden, but that never happened.

Married 16 of Nobember 1511 in Stockholm to Kristina Nilsdotter (1494-1559), daughter of Nils Eriksson (Gyllenstierna) and Sigrid Eskilsdotter (Banér).

Sten Sture the younger had to fight the Danish, since the kings of Denmark had claims on the Swedish throne. The Arch bishop Gustaf Trolle supported the Danish, and was therefore deposed by the Parliament. This decision was considered to be a tremendous crime against canonic law. Those present therefore signed and sealed a document where they explained their action.

Sten Sture the younger was banned by the Pope and King Kristian II of Denmark attacked him. In January 1520 Sten Sture was killed in a battle against Kristian. The Council elected Kristian II and he promised them amnesty for their previous actions.
