An article in the old Portuguese Constitution regarding the Succession to the throne

 

Chapter IV Of the succession of the Kingdom

 
Article 86
Her Highness Maria II, by the Grace of God, and formal Abdication, and Cession of His Highness Pedro I, Emperor if Brazil, will always reign in Portugal.
 
Article 87
Her legitimate descendents will succeed to the Throne according to the regular order of primogeniture and representation, always preferring the elder line over the younger lines; in the same line the closest grade over the more remote one; in the same grade to the male over the femela; in the same gender the eldest over the youngest.
 
Article 88
If all lines of legitimate descendants of Her Higness Maria II become extinct, the Crown will pass to the collateral line.
 
Article 89
No foreigner may ever succeed to the Crown of the Kingdom of Portugal.
 
Article 90
The marriage of the presumptive Heir to the Crown Princess must be with the consent of the King, and never with a foreigner. If there is no King at the time of the wedding, the act cannot be effectuated without the approval of the General Courts. Her husband cannot be part om the Government and will only be called King, after the Queen has given birth to his son or daughter.
