Carlos I

King 1516-1556

He was born on February 24, 1500. Parents: Filip, Archduke of Austria, and Juana of Aragon. He became King of the Spains in 1516.
In 1519 he was elected Emperor (Karl V). He assembled the Reichstag in Worms in 1521 in order to try to stop the religious fights. In 1522 he stopped an uprize in Castile. He defended Italy in four wars against King Francois I of France 1521-1544.
In 1556 he was tired of reigning and left Spain, Naples, Burgundy and the Netherlands to his son Felipe and the Empire to his brother Ferdinand. He lived his last years in a monestry in San Juste in Spain, where he died on September 21, 1558.
He married Isabella of Portugal on March 11, 1526.
Children: Felipe II, Juana, Maria, Marguerite.

Felipe II

King 1556-1598

He was born on May 21, 1527. His parents were King Carlos I and Queen Isabella (née Princess of Portugal). He became King in 1556.
He married Maria of Portugal on November 12, 1543. She died on July 12, 1545.
Son: Carlos.
On July 25, 1554 he married Mary I of England, who died on November 17, 1558.
In 1559 he married Elizabeth of France, who died in 1568.
Daughters: Isabella, Catarina.
In 1570 he married Anna of Austria.
Children: Ferdinand, Duarte, Felipe III, Maria.
Under his reign the inquisition period reached its peak and all protestantism was removed from the kingdom. He faught against Queen Elizabeth I of England and lost his armada.
He died on September 13, 1598 and was succeeded by his son, Felipe III.

Felipe III

King 1598-1621

He was born on April 14, 1578. His parents were King Felipe II and Queen Anna (née Princess of Austria). He became King in 1598 upon the death of his father.
He married Margarita of Austria on April 18, 1599.
Children: Anna, Felipe IV, Maria Anna.
He died on March 31, 1621 and was succeeded by his son, Felipe IV.

Felipe IV

King 1621-1665

He was born on April 8, 1605. His parents were King Felipe III and Queen Margarita (née Princess of Austria). He became King on March 31, 1621 upon the death of his father.
He married Elizabeth of France in 1621, who died in 1644.
Daughter: Maria Teresa.
On November 8, 1649 he married Mariana of Austria.
Children: Margarita Teresa, Carlos II.
He died on September 17, 1665 and was succeeded by Carlos II.

Carlos II

King 1665-1700

He was born on November 6, 1661. Parents: King Felipe IV and Queen Mariana (née Princess of Austria). He became King on September 17, 1665 upon the death of his father.
On November 19, 1679 he married Marie Louise of Orleans.
When he died on November 1, 1700, he had no natural successor. Therefore a war went on 1700-1713 between the European states about his legacy.

Felipe V

King 1700-1724, 1724-1746

He was born on December 19, 1683. His parents were Louis, Dauphin of France, and Maria, Princess of Bavaria. He became King in 1700 as a result of King Carlos II's will.
On November 2, 1701 he married Gabrielle of Savoie (died on February 14, 1714).
Sons: Luis I, Felipe, Felipe, Ferdinand VI.
On December 24, 1714 he married Isabella Farnese.
Children: Carlos III, Franz, Maria Anna, Felipe, Maria Teresa, Luis, Maria.
In 1724 he abdicated in favour of his son Luis I, but when Luis died, Felipe V became King again. He died on July 9, 1746 and was succeeded by his son Ferdinand VI.

Luis I

1724

He was born on August 25, 1707. His parents were King Felipe V and Queen Gabrielle (née Princess of Savoi). He became King in 1724, when his father abdicated.
On January 20, 1724 he married Maria of Portugal.
He died on August 31, 1724 and was succeeded by his father.

Ferdinand VI

1746-1759

He was born on September 23, 1713. His parents were King Felipe V and Queen Gabrielle. He became King in 1746 upon the death of his father.
He died on August 10, 1759 and was succeeded by his brother Carlos III.

Carlos III

1759-1788

He was born on January 20, 1716. Parents: Felipe V and Queen Isabella. In 1731 he became Duke of Parma and Piacenza and in 1735 he became King of Naples. He became King of Spain in 1759 upon the death of his brother, Ferdinand VI. When he became King of Spain, he gave Naples to his third son, Ferdinand.
On June 19, 1738 he married Maria Amalia of Saxony.
Children: Maria Elisabeta, Maria Josepha, Maria Elisabete, Maria Josepha, Maria Luisa, Felipe Anton, Carlos IV, Maria Teresa, Ferdinand, Gabriel, Maria Anna, Anton Pascal, Franz Xaver.
He died on December 13, 1788 and was succeeded by his son Carlos IV.

Carlos IV

1788-1808

He was born on November 11, 1748. Parents: King Carlos III and Maria Amalia of Saxony. He became King in 1788 upon the death of his father.
He married Marie-Louise of Parma on September 4, 1765. She and her lover Godoy had a huge influence over the King.
Children: Carlos Clemens, Charlotta, Maria Luisa, Maria Amalia, Carlos Dominic, Maria Luisa, Carlos Franz, Felipa Franz, Ferdinand VII, Carlos (Duke of Molina), Maria Isabella, Maria Teresa, Felipe, Francisco (Duke of Cadiz).
After the revolution in 1808, inspired by Godoy and the French, Carlos abdicated in favour of his son Ferdinand VII.
He died on January 19, 1819.

Ferdinand VII

1808, 1813-1833

He was born on August 14, 1784. His parents were King Carlos IV and Queen Marie-Louise (née Princess of Parma).
On October 6, 1802 he maried Antonia of Sicily (died on May 21, 1806).
On September 29, 1816 he married Isabella of Portugal (died on December 26, 1818).
Daughter: Maria Isabella.
On October 20, 1819 he married Maria Josepha of Saxony (died on May 17, 1829).
On December 11, 1829 he married Maria Cristina of Sicily.
Daughters: Isabella II, Luisa.
He became King on March 18, 1808, after his father had been dethroned, but on May 10, he was forced by Napoleon to abdicate. Instead, Napoleon's brother Josef (José) became King.
In 1813, he became King again and abolished the liberal constitution of 1812, but after a revolution in 1820, he had to accept the constitution of 1812. After a French intervention in 1823, the constitution was once again abolished.
Ferdinand VII changed the Act of Succession, thereby allowing a daughter to inherit the throne if the King had no sons. When he died in 1833, he was succeeded by his daughter, Isabella II. Ferdinand's brother Carlos, Duke of Molina, did not accept this and declared himself King Carlos V.

José

1808-1813

Born on January 7, 1768. Parents: Carlo Bonaparte and Marie Letizia Ramolino. His brother, the French Emperor Napoleon, made him King of Spain in 1808. He was also King of Naples.
Married on August 1, 1794 to Julie Clary.
Daughters: Zenaide, Charlotte.
In 1813 he was dethroned, and Ferdinand VII was once again King.
He died on July 28, 1844.

Isabella II

1833-1868

She was born on October 10, 1830. Parents: King Ferdinand VII and Queen Maria Cristina (née Princess of Sicily). She became Queen upon the death of her father.
On October 19, 1846 she married her first cousin Franciso de Asis, son of Carlos IV's son Francisco, Duke of Cadiz.
Children: Eulalia, Isabella, Alfonso XII.
In 1868 she was dethroned, and the Spain became a republic. She died on April 9, 1904.

Amadeo

1870-1873

He was born on May 30, 1845. His parents were King Vittorio Emanuele II of Italy and Adeliade of Austria. He became King on December 4, 1870 when Spain became a Kingdom again.
Son: Amadeo.
On February 11, 1873 he abdicated. He died on January 18, 1890.

Alfonso XII

1874-1885

He was born on November 28, 1857. Parents: Queen Isabella II and (titular) King Francisco de Asis. He became King in 1874.
In 1878 he married Maria de las Mercedes, who died the same year.
In 1879 he married Maria Cristina of Austria.
Children: Maria de las Mercedes, Maria Teresa, Alfonso XIII.
He died in 1885. His son was born on May 17, 1886 and became immediately King.

Alfonso XIII

1886-1931

He was born posthumously on May 17, 1886. Parents: King Alfonso XII and Queen Maria Cristina (née Archduchess of Austria). He became King the moment he was born.
On May 31, 1906 he married Princess Victoria Eugenie (Ena) of Battenberg.
Children: Alfonso, Jaime, Beatriz, Maria Cristina, Juan, Gonzalo.
On April 14, 1931 he was deposed and the republic was declare.
He died on February 28, 1941.

Juan Carlos I

1975-

Born on January 5, 1938. Parents: Juan, Count of Barcelona (third son of King Alfonso XIII), and Princess Maria de las Mercedes of Bourbon-Sicily.
He was appointed heir to the throne by General Franco and Cortes (the Parliament) in 1969, and became King upon the death of General Franco in 1975.
Married on May 14, 1962, to Sophia, Princess of Greece and Denmark.
Children: Helena, Christina, Felipe.
