Alexandru Ioan Cuza

Prince 1859-1866

Born in 1820. Colonel Alexandru Ioan Cuza managed to be elected Prince of both Moldau and Valakia in 1859. Two years later he united the two areas and proclaimed himself Prince of Romania. He was deposed in 1866 and died in 1873.

Carol I

Prince 1866-1881, King 1881-1914

His full name was Carol (Karl) Eitel Friedrich Zephyrinus Ludwig and he was born Prince of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen. He was born on April 20, 1839. His parents were Prince Karl Anton of Hohenzollern and Josefine (née Princess of Baden). On April 20th, 1866 he was elected Prince of Romania.
He was proclaimed King of Romania on March 26th, 1881.
On November 15th, 1869 he married Princess Elisabeth zu Wied. She was born on December 29th, 1843 and died on March 3rd, 1916.
Daughter: Marie.
Since he had no sons, his nephew Ferdinand was made Crown Prince of Romania in 1889.
On October 10th, 1914 he died and was succeeded by his nephew, Ferdinand I.

Ferdinand I

King 1914-1927

He was born on August 24th, 1865. His full name was Ferdinand Viktor Albert Meinrad. His parents were Prince Karl of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen and Antoinette (née Princess Murat). In 1889 he was made Crown Prince. He became King on October 10th, 1914 upon the death of his uncle, King Carol I.
He married Mary Alexandra Victoria, Princess of Great Britain and Ireland, Princess of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, Duchess of Saxony, on January 10th, 1893. She was born on October 29th, 1875 and died on July 18th, 1938.
Children: Carol II, Elisabeta, Marie, Nicolae.
He died on July 20th, 1927 and was succeeded by his grandson Mihai I.

Mihai I

King 1927-1930, 1940-1947

He was born on June 16th, 1937. His parents were Carol II, King of Romania and Princess Elena (née Princess of Greece and Denmark). He became King on July 20th, 1927 upon the death of his grandfather Ferdinand I. On June 8th, 1930 he was deposed by his father Carol II. He became King again on September 6h, 1940 upon his father's abdication. On December 30th, 1947 he was forced to leave Romania and the monarchy was abolished.
On June 10th, 1948 he married Princess Anne of Bourbon-Parma, born on September 18th, 1923.
Daughters: Margarita, Elena, Irina, Sophie, Maria.
King Mihai has appointed his eldest daughter Margarita as the future head of the Royal Family, but she can't claim the throne, since Romania had Salic law.

Carol II

King 1930-1940

He was born on October 15th, 1893. His parents were King Ferdinand I and Queen Marie (née Princess of Great Britain and Ireland). On December 25th, 1925 he renounced his right of succession. On June 6th, 1930 he returned to Romania and reclaimed his rights. On June 8th he deposed his son, Mihai I and became King.
On August 31st, 1918 he married 1st Joana Marie Valentina Lambrino, born on October 3rd, 1898, died on March 11th, 1953. The marriage was annulled on April 13th, 1919.
Son: Mircea.
On March 10th, 1921 he married 2nd Princess Elena of Greece and Denmark, born on May 2nd, 1896, died on November 28th, 1982. Divorce 1928.
Son: Mihai I.
Married 3rd on July 3rd, 1947 to Elena Lupescu, born on September 15th, 1899, died on June 29th, 1977.
On September 6th, 1940 he abdicated and was succeeded by his son, Mihai I.
He died on April 4th, 1953.
