Crowned King of all three countries in Kalmar on 17 of June 1397. Shared the power with Margareta until her death in 1412. Deposed in Sweden in October 1439, in Denmark the same year and in Norway in 1441. He was succeeded by his nephew Christoffer. He died 3 of May 1459 in Pomerania.

In 1457 he was asked to become King of Sweden and was crowned in Uppsala 3 of July 1457. In 1459 he became Duke of Slesvig and Count of Holstein. He was deposed in Sweden in 1464. He died on May 21, 1481 in Copenhagen.

He also lost the war against Sweden 1643-1645, and was forced to accept the peace treaty of Brömsebro in 1645.
