Married 20 of September 1881 to Sophia Maria Victoria (1862-1930), daughter of Fredrik, Grand Duke of Baden, and Louise of Prussia. Children: Gustaf VI Adolf, Carl Vilhelm Ludvig (1884-1965) Duke of Södermanland, Erik Gustaf Ludvig Albert (1889-1918) Duke of Västmanland.
